What is the best thing about teaching at the residency?
There is endless potential when teaching new doctors; the enthusiasm and curiosity is infectious! I also have some niche areas of interest and I like to make sure new docs are exposed to this material in their training so they can potentially incorporate some of it into their ultimate careers…chiefly, Quality Improvement, as I believe so strongly in its ability to contribute to better care for our patients.
How did you end up in Alaska?
Nothing novel here…adventure. Adventure brought me to Alaska. I knew I liked rural medicine. And I knew I was up for something outside of the bell curve. So when I was doing locums, I accepted a short contract in Nome, AK. Ended up practicing medicine out there for about 5 years and when it was time for a change, I couldn’t imagine leaving this ridiculously gorgeous state. Well…and by then I had found me a bush pilot husband, so…
