Kala Maus, DO
Kala grew up in Western Montana, where the borders of her small town blurred into the surrounding mountains. She spent her childhood exploring the outdoors with neighborhood friends and developed a love for steep inclines, dirt covered trails, and adventure.
While completing her undergraduate degree in exercise science, her sense of adventure led her to rural Kenya, where she volunteered with local communities to design clean water wells and composting latrines. This experience inspired Kala’s pursuit of medicine and she developed a passion for community health and rural outreach. After living in Peru and working as a phlebotomist back home, she moved to Colorado for medical school at Rocky Vista University.
Kala quickly found family medicine aligned perfectly with her upbringing and experience working with rural communities. She loves how family medicine enables her to reach people in any environment and provides the knowledge to tackle any medical complaint.
Kala is thrilled to do residency in Alaska and continue her pursuit of adventure in the final frontier. She chose AKFMR because of the program’s unparalleled rural experience and the opportunity to serve the diverse patient populations that call Alaska home. Her particular interests include rural medicine, wilderness medicine, and women’s health.
Outside of medicine, Kala loves to spend time in the mountains trail running, mountain biking, and skiing and has recently discovered a passion for cooking and baking.
